HI,

I am interested if there is information pertaining to the source for the Freshwater Fish that is used in the data sets. Any idea if it is from wild capture inland fisheries or aquaculture?

I am interested in wild capture fisheries only and the role it plays in food security (excluding aquaculture) in Africa and Asia..

Any ideas..

Cheers,
Andrew

Dear Andrew

The data used in constructing food balance sheets for fish and fishery products are comprehensive of capture and aquaculture data.

A food balance sheet is the result of an equation where several variables play their role (total food supply equals production, less reduction to meal and other non-food uses, plus imports, less exports, plus or less variation in stocks). Whereas disaggregated data by species for both domains are certainly available on the production side, on the other hand trade statistics do not make any distinction between fish caught in the wild and farmed one. By not doing so, data in the balances would not be homogenous, therefore we are compelled to use the current methodology in order to keep consistency between all various elements. You may obtain a very approximate idea of wild capture contribution in food security by looking at disaggregated production data versus total ones, but never taking trade into account, which would lead to a distorted vision, in particular for those Asian countries which are significant traders in freshwater species.

We take this opportunity to inform you that the FAO Fisheries statistics are accessible to external users in different ways:

1) Searching through the Online query panels, which enable advanced users to extract customized information and reports, at http://www.fao.org/fishery/topic/16140/en

2) Alternatively, data can be downloaded as Database-Cum-Software System called FishStatJ for fishery statistical time series at http://www.fao.org/fishery/statistics/s ... shstatj/en

3) Through the FAO Yearbook of Fisheries Statistics (http://www.fao.org/fishery/publications/yearbooks/en ). Latest issue, printed in 2014, available at ftp://ftp.fao.org/FI/CDrom/CD_yearbook_2012/index.htm

Please note that any information from any of the above products may be quoted if reference is made to the source. We trust this information is useful to your studies.
